Academic profile

Dr. Nimet Keseli Ustabaşı completed a doctorate in 2025 at Bursa Uludağ University, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Sociology of Religion programme. The dissertation used field research to examine how Islamic family values produce a "hybridising" habitus among political party members in Çanakkale.

This work brings Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field and capital to bear on topics such as marital equivalence (kafa'ah), the formation of political preferences, delayed marriage, and the psycho-social effects of religious services in prisons.

The research is grounded in long-standing professional experience within the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), including service as a Qur'an course instructor, preacher (vaiz) and Deputy Provincial Mufti of Çanakkale, and currently as a Presidency Preacher (Başkanlık Vaizi) at the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Dr. Keseli Ustabaşı also holds a family counselling certificate.
